Minimally Invasive Dental Implants in Louisville, KY
Dental implants are an effective way to replace missing teeth, but concerns about surgery and recovery can keep patients from pursuing treatment. Bone loss can create another challenge, especially for patients who have worn dentures or lived with missing teeth for years. At Freedom Dental Implants, we provide minimally invasive dental implants that measure less than 3 millimeters in diameter, approximately half the width of traditional implants. Their smaller size gives Dr. Ackerman more flexibility when treating patients with limited jawbone. Combined with a less invasive surgical approach, these implants can make tooth replacement possible for patients who have previously been hesitant about treatment or concerned about their eligibility.
How Are Minimally Invasive Dental Implants Placed?
Minimally invasive dental implant placement uses a small opening in the gums to reach the jawbone. Dr. Ackerman uses this technique at Freedom Dental Implants to place implants instead of making a large incision or pulling back the gum tissue. The smaller surgical opening limits tissue disruption and typically eliminates the need for stitches.
Before treatment, Dr. Ackerman takes a 3D cone beam CT (CBCT) scan to examine your jawbone. She measures the available bone, identifies important structures such as nerves and sinus cavities, and plans the position of each implant. The scan helps her determine where to place the dental implant without surgically exposing the bone.
On the day of your procedure, Dr. Ackerman administers local anesthesia to numb the treatment area. Once the anesthetic takes effect, she uses a small drill to create a pilot hole through the gums and into the jawbone. A pilot hole is a narrow opening that establishes the path for the implant.
Dr. Ackerman then guides the implant into the prepared opening and carefully threads it into the bone. The implant’s threads engage the surrounding bone and provide the initial stability needed to hold it in position.
After placement, the small opening in your gums begins to heal. Most patients don’t need stitches because Dr. Ackerman hasn’t lifted the gum tissue away from the bone. The limited tissue disruption can also reduce bleeding, swelling, and soreness during recovery.
Over the next several months, your jawbone gradually bonds with the implant through a natural healing process called osseointegration. The implant may feel secure shortly after placement, but the bone still needs time to heal around it. Dr. Ackerman will explain what you can expect during this healing period and when your implant will be ready to support your crown, bridge, or denture.
How Does Minimally Invasive Placement Affect Recovery?
One of the biggest advantages of minimally invasive dental implants is that Dr. Ackerman can limit the amount of gum tissue affected during surgery. The small opening still needs to heal, but the surrounding gums haven’t been cut, lifted, or stretched to expose the bone. With less tissue to repair, patients often experience less bleeding, swelling, and soreness afterward.
At Freedom Dental Implants, Dr. Ackerman tells patients to expect some mild achiness during the first 24 to 48 hours. Many patients experience very little swelling, and some return to work the following day. She generally recommends soft foods for the first couple of weeks to avoid putting unnecessary pressure on the treatment area.
Your gums and jawbone also heal at different rates. The gum tissue begins repairing the small surgical opening shortly after placement. Your jawbone, however, needs more time to heal and form a strong connection with the implant. Even if your mouth feels comfortable after a few days, the bone continues healing for several months. Following Dr. Ackerman’s aftercare instructions helps protect the implant during this important period.
