Dental Implants Without Bone Graft Surgery: When Is It Possible?

Many patients ask us about getting dental implants without bone graft surgery. Bone grafting is so frequently associated with implant treatment that you might expect to need one, especially if you’ve been missing teeth for years. A bone graft involves placing bone material in an area of the jaw where bone has been lost. Over time, your body builds new bone around the material, creating additional support for a dental implant. But even if you’ve experienced jawbone loss, a graft isn’t always necessary.

At Freedom Dental Implants, Dr. Regan Ackerman looks for ways to make the most of the healthy bone you already have. Her experience with mini dental implants expands the possibilities for patients with limited bone, helping many avoid additional procedures. She knows that no two patients have exactly the same needs, and with several implant options available, she can tailor your treatment to the bone you have and the teeth you need to replace.

Can You Get Dental Implants Without a Bone Graft?

Yes, you can get dental implants without a bone graft if you have enough healthy jawbone to support them. Some bone loss doesn’t automatically mean grafting is necessary. The amount of bone remaining, its location, and the size of the implant all influence your treatment options.

At Freedom Dental Implants, Dr. Ackerman uses mini dental implants. Mini implants are just under 3 millimeters in diameter, which may be ideal for patients who have lost jawbone over time. Because these implants are narrower than conventional implants, they can often fit into areas where a wider implant would require additional bone. For patients with a narrow jawbone, choosing a smaller implant may eliminate the need for grafting altogether.

Of course, implant size isn’t the only factor. Your jaw must have enough bone height and quality to hold the implant securely. The type of replacement teeth you need, whether a single crown, a bridge, or an implant denture, also influences how much support is required.

You may have more options than you were originally told, even if another dentist has recommended bone grafting.

When Is a Bone Graft Necessary for Dental Implants?

Most patients would prefer to avoid a bone graft, and we understand why. But sometimes, rebuilding lost bone is necessary to give an implant the support it needs.

After you lose a tooth, the jawbone that once surrounded its roots begins to shrink. Over time, the ridge can lose both width and height. In your lower jaw, this can leave less bone between the top of the ridge and the nerve canal beneath it. We have to maintain a safe distance from that nerve when placing an implant.

A narrower implant can help with limited bone width, and a shorter implant may work when height is the problem. But if neither can be placed safely with adequate support, you may need bone grafting to rebuild the area.

We won’t know what your jaw can support until we’ve examined it. During your free consultation, we’ll take a 3D CBCT scan to measure the available bone, identify any limitations, and explain which treatment options are appropriate for you.
