The short answer
Dr. Ackerman describes mini implant placement as less invasive but does not promise a pain-free recovery. Some aching is expected, particularly after more extensive treatment, and the office provides instructions for managing discomfort.
Concern about pain can keep people from asking about implant treatment. In this video, Dr. Regan Ackerman explains what her patients commonly report and how she helps them manage discomfort after mini implant placement.
Is getting a mini dental implant painful? So it’s definitely a lot less invasive because I don’t have to make any incisions when I place it, and it’s a smaller diameter implant. So I would say overall, yes, it’s a lot less painful. Now, am I going to say you’re not going to have some achiness or some pain? No, let’s be real.
I’m placing an implant in your mouth, but compared to a surgical implant or even maybe an extraction or a root canal, it’s definitely a lot less painful. And we’re going to give you medication or talk to you about how to manage that pain, but I would say, especially for a single tooth, a single mini dental implant, I mean, I don’t want to say it’s no pain, but I’ve had patients come back to me and say, "I didn’t have any issues or pain. I took ibuprofen and went to work the next day."
Now, if we’re doing a full arch restoration or denture stabilization, you’re going to have some achiness the first 24, 48 hours, that’s to be expected. But you’re not going to be out for a week, 2 weeks, and we’re going to help you manage the pain appropriately with what medications we recommend. But overall, a lot less invasive than the surgical implants because I’m not making any incisions.
It’s not going to be like extractions or a root canal, so a lot less painful. And everybody’s pain tolerance is different, let’s be honest. But I have so many patients that come back and say, "Hey Doc, it was a lot less painful than I expected."

Dr. Ackerman distinguishes replacing one tooth from treating a full arch or stabilizing a denture. She also notes that pain tolerance varies. Discussing your specific procedure helps her explain the recovery instructions and comfort measures she recommends for you.
