Sedation Dentistry in Louisville, KY

Nitrous oxide can help make dental implant treatment feel calmer and more manageable while you stay awake, responsive, and in control.

Deciding to replace missing teeth doesn’t mean you’re comfortable with everything it might take to get there. An extraction or implant placement can feel intimidating. Not knowing exactly what will happen in the chair can add to that anxiety. At Freedom Dental Implants, we provide sedation dentistry in Louisville, KY, using nitrous oxide to help you relax during treatment.

Nitrous oxide can help you relax during treatment, while conversations beforehand can address some of the uncertainty surrounding the procedure. Research on dentist-patient communication suggests that understanding treatment and participating in decisions about care can help reduce dental fear. At Freedom Dental Implants, you’ll have those conversations with Dr. Regan Ackerman. She plans and performs your treatment, so you can discuss your concerns directly with the dentist who will be caring for you.

A Closer Look at Sedation Dentistry

Sedation dentistry refers to medications a dentist may provide to reduce anxiety and help you feel more relaxed during treatment.

At Freedom Dental Implants, we provide nitrous oxide, commonly known as laughing gas. Nitrous oxide provides conscious sedation, which means you remain awake and responsive during treatment.

Sedation also serves a different purpose from the local anesthetic Dr. Ackerman may administer before treatment. Local anesthetic numbs the treatment area to control pain. Nitrous oxide helps reduce anxiety and promote relaxation. Depending on the procedure, Dr. Ackerman may provide both because each addresses a different need.

What Does Nitrous Oxide Sedation Feel Like?

Before Dr. Ackerman begins your procedure, we place a small mask over your nose. As you breathe normally through your nose, we gradually introduce nitrous oxide and check how you feel. Within a few minutes, you may begin to feel calmer and more relaxed. Some people notice a warm, floaty sensation, mild tingling, or a sense of lightness as the nitrous takes effect.

You remain aware of what is happening around you and can hear and respond to Dr. Ackerman throughout the procedure. We continue checking how you are doing and can adjust the amount of nitrous oxide you receive.

When Dr. Ackerman finishes your procedure, we stop the nitrous oxide and have you breathe oxygen through the mask as the sedation wears off. Nitrous leaves the body quickly through your lungs, so you should begin feeling more like yourself within several minutes.

A heavy meal before nitrous oxide can increase the chance of nausea. After your appointment, keep in mind that recovering from the sedation and recovering from your dental procedure are two different things. An extraction, bone graft, or implant placement may come with its own eating, activity, and recovery instructions.

Can I Use Sedation for Dental Implant Treatment?

Dental implant treatment can look very different depending on what you need to rebuild your smile. We may replace one missing tooth with an implant-supported crown or use several implants to secure a snap-in denture or support a full-arch bridge. Some patients need an extraction or bone grafting before implant placement.

Your treatment may also happen over several appointments. If a tooth needs to be removed, for example, we typically give the area time to heal before placing the implant rather than combining both procedures in one visit. Seeing several procedures on your treatment plan can feel like a lot at first, but each appointment has a specific purpose in rebuilding your smile.

Research also points to fear of the procedure and concerns about discomfort as common sources of dental fear. In one survey of more than 1,500 adults, oral surgery was the type of dental care participants most often identified as causing the greatest anxiety.

Sedation may be an option for a part of your treatment that makes you especially anxious. We consider the procedure planned for that visit, along with your concerns, when determining whether sedation is a good fit for you.

How Does Sedation Dentistry Fit Into My Treatment Plan?

As part of your free consultation, we take a CBCT scan that creates a 3D view of your teeth and jawbone. Dr. Ackerman reviews the images and examines your dental needs.

Dr. Ackerman can also explain what receiving that treatment involves, including how she performs the procedure and what you may see, hear, or feel during the appointment.

Tell her what makes you nervous. Discuss any previous dental experiences that affect how you feel about returning to the chair. Knowing which parts of your planned care concern you helps her address those questions directly and consider where sedation may fit into your treatment.

Nitrous oxide isn’t recommended based on anxiety alone. Dr. Ackerman also considers the procedure planned for that appointment and reviews your health history and medications before determining if nitrous oxide is appropriate for you. Certain health conditions can affect whether inhaled sedation is suitable, so this conversation helps her determine how to approach your care safely and comfortably.

Dr. Ackerman will also be the dentist performing your treatment. When you return for your procedure, you’ll be seeing the dentist who already knows your treatment plan and the concerns you discussed together.

Answers to your questions

Nitrous oxide does not numb your teeth, gums, or jaw. Its primary purpose is to reduce anxiety and help you relax during treatment.

For procedures that require numbing, Dr. Ackerman uses local anesthetic to control pain in the treatment area. You may still notice pressure, movement, or vibration during certain procedures. If something hurts, let us know so Dr. Ackerman can check the area and determine if you need additional anesthetic.

Nitrous oxide may be an option if dental anxiety makes it difficult to relax during treatment, but you want to remain awake and able to communicate. It may also help if you have a sensitive gag reflex or feel particularly anxious about an extraction, implant placement, or another part of your treatment.

Nitrous oxide is delivered through a small nasal mask, so you need to be able to breathe comfortably through your nose. Dr. Ackerman will also review your health history and planned procedure before determining if nitrous oxide is appropriate for you.

Certain health conditions and medications can affect whether nitrous oxide is appropriate. Nasal congestion, sinusitis, or another condition that prevents you from breathing comfortably through your nose can interfere with receiving the gas.

Some chronic lung conditions and recent ear, nose, and throat surgery require special consideration.

Coverage for nitrous oxide varies among dental insurance plans. Freedom Dental Implants is out of network with all insurance companies. But our team completes and submits insurance paperwork for you. If your plan reimburses you for a covered treatment, payment is sent directly to you.
