If your lower denture shifts when you bite or chew, you’ve probably stopped eating certain foods altogether. Many patients who visit us in Louisville struggle to eat solid foods comfortably because their dentures won’t stay where they’re supposed to. Snap-in dentures offer a more secure solution by attaching your denture to dental implants, helping it remain stable while you eat, speak, and go about your day.
Our practice has been providing dental implant treatment for more than 20 years, and Dr. Regan Ackerman has placed approximately 10,000 implants. Even with all that experience, snap-in dentures are still her favorite treatment. There’s nothing quite like seeing someone who once struggled to enjoy their favorite foods rediscover the joy of holiday gatherings, family celebrations, and even simple meals at home.
What Are Snap-In Dentures?
Removable snap-in dentures (sometimes called implant-retained dentures, snap-on dentures, or overdentures) are full dentures that attach to dental implants in your jaw. If you flip the denture over, you’ll see 4-8 small housings with rubber O-rings inside. When you press the denture into place, those attachments snap onto the tops of the implants and hold it steady.
The denture will feel much more stable when you eat, smile, and speak, but you can still easily detach it when it’s time to clean it. That makes snap-in dentures easy to care for at home.
For people who already wear dentures and struggle with slipping, soreness, or irritation, transitioning to a snap-in denture is often surprisingly simple. The added stability can bring real relief, helping you feel more comfortable, more confident, and more like yourself during meals, conversations, and other moments big and small.
However, some patients would rather keep their teeth in place and only have Dr. Ackerman remove them. If that sounds like you, we offer other implant denture options, such as full-arch roundhouse bridges.
Snap-In Dentures vs. Traditional Dentures
A traditional denture rests on top of your gums and depends on suction or denture adhesive for stability. Lower dentures can be especially difficult to keep in place because there is less surface area for support, and your tongue is constantly moving nearby. Over time, that instability can make some foods harder to eat and may even cause you to favor one side when chewing.
Snap-in dentures work differently because dental implants keep the denture in place. That added support means you don’t need to rely on messy adhesives and can feel more confident that your teeth won’t shift.
They can also feel less bulky than traditional dentures. Because the implants provide extra support, both upper and lower snap-in dentures tend to require less acrylic. Upper snap-in dentures also don’t need to cover the entire roof of your mouth. That leaves more of your palate exposed so you can taste and enjoy your food more fully. If you’ve been disappointed by how much a traditional denture affects your sense of taste, snap-in dentures can make mealtimes more enjoyable again.
Patients often focus on the stability dental implants provide, but another important benefit is the support they offer your jawbone over time. After you lose teeth, the bone in that area shrinks. As this happens, a denture that once fit well may start to feel loose. Implants stimulate the jawbone to prevent bone loss. When you get implants, it’s like having your natural tooth roots back again.
Why We Use One-Piece Implants for Your Snap-In Denture
Many dental implant providers use traditional two-piece implants. To place them, they lift the gum tissue, screw the implant base into the bone, and stitch the gums closed. Due to the invasive nature of the procedure, you need to wait several months for the treatment site to heal. Then, during a second procedure, the piece that holds your teeth is secured.
This multi-stage, multi-visit procedure means more surgery and more time spent waiting for your new smile.
Fortunately, dental implant advances have made other treatment options possible.
Dr. Ackerman, for example, uses one-piece implants, which are made as a single unit. Since there’s no second piece to add later, treatment takes one stage (one visit) instead of two.
These implants come in several widths, including narrow options such as mini dental implants. Because narrower implants require less bone, they can make implant treatment possible for many patients who have experienced bone loss.
In fact, many patients come to us after being told elsewhere that they don’t have enough bone for dental implants. In some cases, the issue is that they don’t have enough bone to support larger two-piece implants. We’re often able to give them the good news that one-piece implants are still an option.
The one-piece implant approach gives patients a simpler, less invasive treatment with fewer office visits and a lower overall cost. And because the placement technique is minimally invasive, Dr. Ackerman can attach your snap-in denture the same day she places your implants. This allows you to leave with secure teeth and start using them right away.
The Snap-In Denture Process at Freedom Dental Implants
Your Free Consultation
Your first appointment includes a cone beam CT (CBCT) scan so Dr. Ackerman can see a detailed 3D image of your jawbone. You’ll meet with her personally during this visit and at every appointment that follows. She’ll review your scan with you, explain what she finds, and create a treatment plan based on your needs and goals. Before you head home, Lisa will walk you through the cost of treatment and your available financing options.
Extractions and Healing (If Needed)
If you still have some natural teeth, Dr. Ackerman will only recommend removing those that can no longer be saved. After any necessary extractions, we usually allow about three months for your gums and jawbone to heal before placing implants. This gives your bone and surrounding tissues time to recover before implant placement.
Implant Placement and Your New Denture
On the day of your procedure, Dr. Ackerman numbs the area to keep you comfortable—just like when you get a filling. If you’re feeling anxious, we can administer nitrous oxide (laughing gas) to help you relax.
Dr. Ackerman then places your implants. Since the implants are each one piece, there’s no need for another surgery later to attach a second piece. Most snap-in dentures use 4 to 6 one-piece implants on the lower jaw and 6 to 8 on the upper jaw.
If you’re getting a new denture, she snaps it into place before you head home. If your current denture still fits well, you may not need to start from scratch. We may be able to adjust it so it connects to your new implants.
By the end of your visit, you’ll have a denture that feels much more secure.
Ongoing Care
At home, you’ll take your snap-in denture out at night and clean it like you would a regular denture. You’ll also want to clean around the implants before putting it back in.
About once a year, you’ll visit Freedom Dental Implants so we can replace the O-rings inside your denture. These small rings help maintain a firm, secure snap as you put your denture into place. And if anything ever feels off or needs an adjustment, we’ll take care of it.
How Much Do Snap-In Dentures Cost in Louisville?
At Freedom Dental Implants, snap-in dentures cost $7,500 per arch. That includes the implants and the denture. In many cases, that ends up being 25 to 50 percent less than the treatment plans patients bring us from other offices in the area.
If you already have a treatment plan from another office, bring it with you to your consultation. We’ll take a look and do our best to match or beat the price.
We also offer a few ways to make treatment more affordable. You can save 5 percent by paying with a check. Or, if you’d rather spread out the cost, we work with several financing companies, and the online application only takes a few minutes.
Because we’re out-of-network with dental insurance plans, we have more flexibility to offer discounts instead of working within an insurance company’s fee schedule. You can still use your benefits, though. Lisa will fill out the paperwork and send it in for you, and if your plan pays a benefit, that reimbursement goes directly to you.

Of all the treatments Dr. Ackerman provides, snap-in dentures are her favorite. She gets to see patients eat real food again, sometimes for the first time in years.
And for many people, the change goes beyond eating. One patient told us he had spent so long hiding his mouth that he didn’t even know how to smile anymore. After getting his new teeth, he had to learn how to smile again. Stories like his are a big part of why our small, family-run team loves doing this work.
If you’ve been dealing with a loose denture or avoiding foods you used to enjoy, you may be closer to that kind of change than you think.
Patients come to our Louisville office from Southern Indiana and from nearby communities along I-65, including Elizabethtown and Mount Washington. Contact us today to schedule your free consultation and find out if snap-in dentures are right for you.
