More ways to replace missing teeth. One doctor to guide you.
Sometimes missing teeth change your habits little by little. You may start chewing on the other side, passing on foods that are harder to manage, or smiling a little less freely than you used to. Over time, those small adjustments can start to feel like part of your routine. If you wear a lower denture, working around it can mean skipping foods that make it shift or worrying about your teeth moving while you eat. Some of our patients tell us salad was one of the first foods they stopped ordering. Others say they had been hiding their smile in photos for years. At Freedom Dental Implants, we use one-piece dental implants to help patients move past those everyday workarounds.
One-piece implants can replace anything from a single missing tooth to a full arch of teeth. Dr. Regan Ackerman has placed roughly 10,000 of these implants, and our practice has been replacing missing teeth in the Louisville area for more than 20 years. We see patients from across Louisville and Southern Indiana, including many who travel up I-65 to see us for their care.
A dental implant replaces the root of a missing tooth. It sits in the jawbone and gives a crown, bridge, or denture something solid to attach to.
With a traditional dental implant, the implant and the piece that holds the new tooth are separate. The implant is placed first and allowed to heal in the jawbone. After that, a second piece called an abutment is attached before the crown, bridge, or denture goes on.
A one-piece implant works differently. The implant and abutment are already connected as one piece, so no separate component needs to be added later. That means fewer steps and no second procedure to uncover the implant and attach the abutment.
Dr. Ackerman works with one-piece implants in two main sizes:
Having both options gives Dr. Ackerman more flexibility when planning your care. When she reviews your 3D CBCT scan, she evaluates the available bone and chooses the implant size that best fits your mouth and the type of tooth replacement you need.
One-piece implants can be used in a lot of different ways, depending on how many teeth you need to replace and how you want your new teeth to function.
The one-piece design makes a big difference in how treatment feels, how many visits you need, and what recovery looks like afterward.
To place two-piece implants into the bone, the gums have to be opened. That requires an incision and stitches. Once the bone is exposed, a series of progressively larger drills makes space for the wide implant body.
With one-piece implants, Dr. Ackerman can place the implant more gently using a small pilot hole through the gum tissue. This technique causes less disruption to the gums and bone and supports a smoother recovery. Because the procedure is minimally invasive, most patients can return to work or resume normal daily routines within 24-48 hours.
Because the abutment is already built into the implant, you don’t need a separate procedure later to attach it. While traditional implants require a two-stage placement approach, one-piece implants need just one stage.
In many cases, Dr. Ackerman can also attach a snap-in denture or temporary teeth the same day the implants are placed. As a result, you’ll make fewer trips to the office and spend less time waiting to enjoy your new smile.
A simpler treatment process also helps us keep costs down. With fewer parts and fewer appointments, our treatment plans are typically 25 to 50 percent less than those at other local implant offices.
Your exact cost will depend on the treatment you need. We offer a 5 percent discount for payment by check, and financing is available through companies such as Happen Bank, Cherry, and CareCredit. If you already have a treatment plan from another office, bring it with you to your consultation. We can review it with you, compare your options, and show you what treatment would look like here.
Peri-implantitis is an infection that affects the gum and bone around a dental implant. One place bacteria can collect on a two-piece implant is the tiny connection between the implant and the abutment, which sits below the gumline and can be difficult to clean.
A one-piece implant does not have that separate connection. Because the implant and abutment are one piece, there is no seam between them where bacteria can settle. Of course, brushing, cleaning around your implants, and keeping up with regular checkups are still important!
With a two-piece implant, a small screw connects the abutment to the implant. Over time, that screw can sometimes loosen or break, requiring a repair or replacement.

One-piece implants do not use an abutment screw, so there is one less part to worry about.
If you’ve been missing teeth for a long time, you’ve likely lost bone in that area. With traditional implants, there may not be enough bone left to support the implant, so many patients need a bone graft to rebuild the area before treatment can begin. Other patients simply aren’t eligible because the bone has deteriorated too much.
Narrow-diameter implants give us another option. Because they’re slimmer than standard implants, they can often fit in areas with less bone. For eligible patients, that means we can place implants without a bone graft and the extra healing time that comes with one.
One-piece implants can work for many adults who need to replace missing teeth. You may be a good candidate if you:
Your overall health matters, too. Conditions like diabetes should be well controlled, and smoking can make healing more difficult and increase the risk of implant failure. Certain medications can also affect how your body heals. That does not always mean implants are off the table. Dr. Ackerman will review your health history with you and explain what may or may not affect your treatment.
The best way to know what will work for you is to book a free consultation so we can meet you and take a closer look at your jawbone. Your consultation includes a cone beam CT scan, which gives Dr. Ackerman a 3D view of your bone so she can see what options align best with your needs and goals.
Most patients can complete treatment in fewer visits than they would with a two-piece implant. Here’s what you can expect when you visit Freedom Dental Implants in Louisville:
At your first visit, Dr. Ackerman will take a CBCT scan, review your jawbone and medical history, and talk through your options with you. Before you leave, Lisa will go over the cost of your treatment plan, explain insurance reimbursement, and discuss financing if you’re interested.
If you need extractions, Dr. Ackerman will take care of that first. She’ll also place bone grafting material if needed, then allow the area about three months to heal.
Some offices remove teeth and place implants at the same visit. Our approach is to let the bone heal first so the implants have a solid foundation before we place them. This process helps improve treatment outcomes.
Dr. Ackerman numbs the area and places the implants through small openings in the gums. Because the abutment is already part of a one-piece implant, there is no second visit to attach it later. With one-piece implants, you only need one placement appointment.
Although the procedure is very gentle, you may feel some minor soreness as the anesthetic wears off. However, it subsides quickly and is easy to manage with over-the-counter pain relievers.
Before you leave, Dr. Ackerman can attach your snap-in denture or a temporary crown or bridge to your implants. That means you can go home with teeth in place instead of waiting with a gap in your smile.
If you’re getting a crown or bridge, we’ll place your final restoration once your gums have healed and the lab has created your custom restoration. That takes just a couple of weeks.
After that, ongoing care at Freedom Dental Implants depends on the type of restoration you have. We’ll make sure you know exactly how to care for your smile, which includes a strong at-home oral hygiene routine. For many patients, we recommend a water flosser to clean around your new teeth and implants.
If something ever feels off with your implants, call us. We’ll take a look and help you figure out what’s going on.
Getting your teeth back shouldn’t mean a long string of surgeries or a price that keeps climbing. With one-piece dental implants, Dr. Ackerman has helped thousands of patients throughout Louisville and Southern Indiana rebuild their smiles with a treatment process that’s simpler and more manageable.
The first step is a free consultation, which includes a CT scan. You’ll sit down with Dr. Ackerman, talk through your options, and get a treatment plan based on what she sees. Before you leave, you’ll also know what your care will cost, so there are no surprises later.

Before your visit
The cost depends on how many teeth you need to replace and which type of restoration you choose.
Implant bridges vary because the price depends on how many teeth are missing and how many implants are needed to support the bridge. During your consultation, we’ll give you a detailed treatment plan so you know what to expect. And if you’d like to finance your care, we can help you with that, too.
Placing a one-piece dental implant is a fairly quick part of the overall treatment. Dr. Ackerman can typically place a single implant in a matter of minutes, while a full-arch case averages about an hour.
One advantage of the one-piece design is that the implant and abutment are already connected, so you don’t need a separate procedure later to attach a second piece. We’ll walk you through the timing ahead of time so there are no surprises on treatment day.
Caring for your implants is very similar to caring for natural teeth: keep them clean and don’t skip your regular dental visits. Brush around your implants every day and clean carefully along the gumline where plaque likes to collect. If you have a bridge, we often suggest using a water flosser to help clean underneath it. For snap-in dentures, remove and clean the denture daily and clean around the implants.
Just as important, keep up with professional cleanings and checkups so we can monitor the gums, bone, and implants and catch any small issues early.
A missing tooth can seem like something you can just work around, especially if it’s not right in the front. But your mouth notices the change. Nearby teeth can start drifting into the open space, causing your bite to shift. Additionally, without an implant to replace the tooth, the jawbone in that area will gradually shrink because it no longer has a root stimulating it.
Replacing the tooth helps keep everything working the way it should. It can make chewing more effective, help protect the teeth you still have, and make it more comfortable to eat a wider variety of foods. And when eating is easier, it’s a lot simpler to maintain a balanced diet and enjoy meals without thinking twice about every bite.
Real patients. Personal care.
One-piece dental implants combine the implant and abutment into a single unit, which reduces the number of treatment steps compared with a traditional two-piece implant. The smile shown here reflects the change that comes with filling in the gaps and rebuilding a complete smile.
