What If I Dont Have Enough Bone for Dental Implants

The short answer

Not having enough bone for a conventional implant does not always rule out a mini dental implant. Dr. Ackerman explains that the smaller diameter may allow treatment with less bone, but she needs a 3D X-ray to assess your situation.

Being told you do not have enough bone for implants can be discouraging. In this video, Dr. Regan Ackerman explains why some patients may still have options with mini dental implants and how she checks whether those options are suitable.

So I have many patients come in for a consultation that were told they didn’t have enough bone for a conventional or surgical implant, and my answer to that is a lot of times you can be a candidate for the mini dental implant. So that’s where the free consultation comes in. I’ll take the 3D x-ray, make sure you do have enough bone for the mini implant, but I think this model just speaks volumes for why that works. For the conventional implant, they need to make this much bigger diameter hole here? A lot of times they make an incision, and that’s why they need a lot more bone, bone width to place their implant.

With the mini dental implant, I’m essentially just making this small little pilot hole here. So the mini dental implant is a smaller diameter implant, so I don’t have to have as much bone to place the implant. So a lot of people that were told they weren’t a candidate for the conventional implant, I’m able to help them out with the mini dental implant. I’d say probably the number one scenario is for denture stabilizations, being able to stabilize that denture with the mini dental implants. My favorite thing to say is that I don’t have to have a lot of bone, I just have to have some bone to place the mini dental implant.

A smaller implant may change your options

Dr. Ackerman’s point is that different implant sizes require different amounts of space. A previous recommendation about conventional implants does not answer every question about mini implants. She still needs to examine your bone before recommending treatment.
