Who Is a Candidate for Implant Dentures

The short answer

Dr. Ackerman explains that many patients who struggle with dentures may be candidates for mini implant-supported dentures, including some who were told they lacked enough bone for other implants. A free consultation and 3D X-ray are needed to evaluate your bone.

If you have worn dentures for years or were previously told you could not have implants, you may wonder whether anything has changed. In this video, Dr. Regan Ackerman explains how she evaluates patients for snap-in dentures and why smaller implants may offer another option.

So you may be wondering if you’re a candidate for implant-supported dentures. I would say the majority of the time, people who come in are candidates. You need to come in for the free consultation so I can do the free 3D x-ray to determine how much bone you have and make sure you’re a candidate. But I will tell you, so many times I’ve helped people out that didn’t think they were a candidate for implants, were told they weren’t a candidate for implants, and I’ve been able to help them out to be able to do the snap-in dentures.

A lot of times, I always say you don’t have to have a lot of bone, you just have to have some bone, because the mini implant is a smaller diameter implant. So I don’t have to make this big huge hole like they do with the surgical implants. I essentially just need a little bone, I don’t need a ton of bone to be able to place the implants. I’ve had patients who have been missing teeth for 10 or 20 years and have been struggling with dentures. And they came to me, and I was able to do snap-in dentures for them.

So anybody can be a candidate. It’s pretty rare that I have to tell somebody they’re not a candidate. Does it happen? Yes, but the majority of the time I can help you out, especially with the snap-in denture with the mini dental implants.

Finding out what is possible for you

Having worn dentures for a long time does not give you a complete answer about implant treatment. Dr. Ackerman uses the 3D X-ray to look at the bone you have now. That evaluation helps her explain whether mini implants can support a more stable denture in your situation.
