The short answer
In this video, Dr. Ackerman describes replacing teeth that cannot be kept with a plan that may include extractions, temporary dentures, and later implant-supported teeth. Options include snap-in dentures and roundhouse bridges, with treatment tailored to the patient.
If many of your teeth are damaged or uncomfortable, you may be worried about what replacing them involves. In this video, Dr. Regan Ackerman explains the full-mouth treatment options she discusses with patients, including temporary teeth during healing.
What is full mouth reconstruction? So a lot of people come in and all the teeth in their mouth either have bone loss what we call periodontal disease, or they’ve worn them down significantly, or they just have a lot of decay, and it’s just the scenario where all the teeth need to come out. So that’s what we call full mouth reconstruction. All the teeth need to come out. And so there are many different ways we can use the mini dental implants or the one-piece implants to restore the mouth back to its function and look like healthier teeth.
So full-mouth reconstruction is where we’re taking out all the teeth, and don’t worry, you’re not going to be without teeth. A lot of times we’ll do maybe immediate dentures through the healing process, and then later, once you’ve healed more, we’ll do snap-in dentures with the mini implants, or a roundhouse bridge where you have permanent teeth. You don’t have to take anything in and out.
But essentially, with full mouth reconstruction we’re getting your smile back, we’re getting your mouth healthy again, we’re taking out those diseased teeth or those broken teeth, but we’re giving you the confidence back to smile and be able to eat and chew again. A lot of people come in that need full mouth reconstruction, and they are avoiding so many foods because they’re just trying to hold on to what they have.

A plan that includes the healing period
Dr. Ackerman emphasizes that replacing teeth involves more than choosing the final restoration. Your plan also explains what you will wear while your mouth heals and how treatment will progress.
