What Is Fix on Six

The short answer

Dr. Ackerman describes her Fix-on-Six approach as a zirconia roundhouse bridge supported by at least six implants, sometimes eight. The bridge may be detachable by the dentist or cemented in place, depending on the patient’s needs.

Fix-on-Six can be confusing when different offices use the name for different treatments. In this video, Dr. Regan Ackerman explains the materials and attachment options she uses and how she chooses between them.

So what is a Fix on Six? So there are many different ways you can do a Fix on Six. My version of the Fix on Six with the mini dental implants, so sometimes I even use 8 implants, so we could call it a Fix on Eight, but there’s 2 different ways that I do it. It just kind of depends on you, your scenario, your age, what I would recommend for you. But one of them, first off, any Fix on Six, we’re going to be doing a roundhouse bridge made out of zirconia.

So it’s a much, much stronger material than a denture. That is one thing I would clarify. If you’re looking into a Fix on Six, make sure you’re not getting a denture material with a Fix on Six, because a denture is not as strong. It’s not going to last as long. So all of my kind of Fix on Sixes are made out of zirconia, so they can be trimmed back pretty significantly.

One version of it is I use the mini dental implants, the 6 implants. Like I said, sometimes I may place 8 if you have a larger mouth or a lot of bone. And then one version is what we call detachable. It gets kind of snapped on. Essentially, to you, it’s permanent.

It’s not going to come in and out every day. You’re going to brush it and take care of it, and then you come see me every 6 months, and I’ll be the one to take it out, clean everything, kind of put some new attachments to keep everything nice and tight. I like this option because it is retrievable, especially for maybe some of my younger patients that might be in their 30s or 40s, and we want that retrievability so we can clean it. There is another option with the Fix on Six where we cement them on permanently. So we use cement, same thing, use the implants, but they get cemented on permanently and nothing— it never comes in and out.

You keep it clean. It just depends on your case and your scenario what recommendation I’m going to make for you. They essentially serve the same purpose. They’re essentially a Fix-on-Six. We’re using a minimum of 6 implants to attach what we call a Roundhouse bridge, which is made out of zirconia, which is basically just going to be like the teeth.

It’s not a denture, so nothing covering the roof of your mouth. You don’t have a bulky denture in your mouth. So there are many different ways to do Fix on Six. I use mini dental implants and zirconia Roundhouse bridges for my Fix on Sixes.

Ask about the bridge and its maintenance

Dr. Ackerman encourages patients to understand what the teeth are made of and how the bridge is attached. Her detachable option stays in place for you but can be removed at the office for maintenance. The cemented option has a different maintenance approach, which she discusses as part of your plan.
