What Is a Dental Implant Crown?

Where does the crown fit in dental implant treatment?

The implant acts as a root, while the crown is the replacement tooth you see. Watch Dr. Ackerman explain how her one-piece mini implant supports the crown through its built-in abutment.

The words “implant,” “abutment,” and “crown” describe different parts of replacing a tooth. In this video, Dr. Regan Ackerman explains how those parts work together and where the visible replacement tooth fits.

What is an implant crown? So an implant crown, essentially if you’re missing a tooth, we are going to use the implant, which is essentially a titanium screw. The mini implant’s a smaller diameter. The titanium screw acts like the root of the tooth, and then it has an abutment attached to it, and then the tooth goes on top of that. An implant crown is essentially the crown or tooth that gets cemented onto the implant.

This is the mini dental implant right here. When I place this implant, I’ll numb you, just local anesthetic, no incisions or stitches, and then the little part that sticks out of the gum is what we call the abutment. It’s built into the implant, it’s a one-piece implant, and so then the crown, which is essentially the tooth, what we call the tooth, gets cemented onto the implant. So an implant crown is just essentially a tooth that we use an implant we use the implant to cement the tooth onto.
