The short answer
Dr. Ackerman describes a CBCT scan as a 3D dental X-ray. It allows her to measure bone height and width and assess implant options. The scan is included at no charge in her free consultation.
You may see “CBCT” listed as part of an implant consultation without knowing what it means. In this video, Dr. Regan Ackerman explains the scan in plain language and how the images help her evaluate your mouth.
What does this abbreviation CBCT mean? You see it everywhere now. So it means a cone beam scan, which is a 3D X-ray? We do it at our free consultations at no charge. Now, a lot of other offices, I’ve seen people charge up to $500 for the CBCT.
Let’s just call it a 3D x-ray. Let’s simplify it. CBCT equals 3D x-ray, which means that I can measure the height of your bone and the width of your bone. I can see a 3D image of your mouth and your teeth and your bone to be able to make a good decision if you’re a candidate for the mini implants and make a recommendation for your treatment plan. So CBCT equals 3D x-ray.
Essentially 3D x-ray. Just think of it like that.

Seeing the bone available for treatment
The scan helps Dr. Ackerman look at more than the visible gap in your teeth. She can assess bone height and width and use that information when explaining your options. As she describes in the video, this imaging is included in the free consultation.
