How to Clean and Care for Implant Dentures

The short answer

Dr. Ackerman recommends removing snap-in dentures at least once daily to clean the denture, gums, and implants. She discusses soaking, using a denture brush, and avoiding toothpaste on the denture because it is abrasive.

Once your denture feels secure, keeping it clean becomes part of your daily routine. In this video, Dr. Regan Ackerman explains how she asks patients to care for their snap-in dentures and the implants underneath.

So you’ve got your implant dentures, your snap-in dentures. You’re excited, you’re ready to eat again, but how do you take care of those? It’s pretty easy. You definitely need to take them out once a day. A lot of people like to use the denture cleaning tablets to soak their denture in.

And then we’ll give you a denture brush to scrub them. Sometimes you can purchase what we call an ultrasonic cleaner, and that just really helps keep the denture extra clean, especially if you struggle with staining, if you’re a smoker or a big coffee drinker. But you definitely want to take your dentures out once a day and clean and soak them. And then when you have your dentures out, you want to rinse your mouth out with a good mouth rinse. And you can even brush your gums and your implants with a regular toothbrush and toothpaste. Don’t ever use toothpaste on a denture. It’s too abrasive.

It will make it collect stains. So we don’t want to use toothpaste to clean the denture. But you definitely want to take your denture out at least once a day.

Some people will sleep without their denture, and that’s when they like to clean it. Some people, when they’re taking their shower, they’ll take their denture out, and that’s when they clean it. But you’ve got to find at least one time during the day, take your denture out. We want to make sure we get any bacteria and keep the denture clean and help prevent stain, but also clean your gums and your implants before you put your dentures back in.

Clean both the denture and your mouth

Dr. Ackerman separates denture care from care for the gums and implants. Removing the denture gives you access to both. She also explains why a product suitable for natural teeth is not necessarily suitable for cleaning the denture itself.
