The short answer
Dr. Ackerman says she most often uses six mini implants to stabilize a denture, with four used in some situations. The number depends on the size of your mouth and the available bone, which she evaluates with a 3D X-ray.
If you are considering a snap-in denture, you may want to know how many implants it will need. In this video, Dr. Regan Ackerman explains her usual approach and why the number is decided after evaluating your mouth.
So a lot of times people ask me, how many implants are you going to place to do this snap-in denture, or what we call denture stabilization? So the minimum that I like to use is 4 of the mini dental implants, but it also depends on how large or small your mouth is and how much bone you have. I would say the majority of the time I am placing 6 mini dental implants to do a snap-in denture. That gives us plenty of implants to stabilize the denture from the front to the back. So the majority of the time it’s going to be 6 mini dental implants.
Sometimes minimally it might be 4 mini implants if you have a smaller mouth, or maybe you don’t have a ton of bone in the back and there’s only enough bone for the 4 implants in the front. But that’s something that would definitely be determined at the free consultation that I offer, because I’ll do that 3D x-ray, determine how much bone you have and kind of be able to go ahead and kind of start planning where I’d be putting implants. So, I can tell you whether it’s going to be 6 implants or 4 implants.
But definitely the majority of the time for snap-in dentures, I’m going to place 6 mini dental implants, sometimes maybe 4, but you will know that because we will talk about it during your consultation, why we’re going to do that. We’ll go over everything.
I’ll probably show you your x-ray. So the majority of the time for a snap-in denture, it’s going to be 6 of the mini dental implants to stabilize your denture.

The number is part of your individual plan
Dr. Ackerman explains that the implants need to support the denture in the areas available for placement. Mouth size and bone distribution can affect that plan. She reviews the X-ray and explains why she recommends a particular number.
