Full Mouth Reconstruction What Treatments Are Involved

The short answer

Dr. Ackerman describes snap-in dentures, roundhouse bridges, or a combination of the two to replace all teeth. She explains that the upper and lower arches can use different options, with the recommendation based on an exam, 3D X-ray, and your goals.

Full-mouth treatment does not mean every patient receives the same replacement teeth. In this video, Dr. Regan Ackerman explains the options she discusses with patients and how upper and lower treatment can be combined.

What treatments does a full mouth reconstruction consist of? So there are many different ways we can restore a full mouth. So full mouth reconstruction, first of all, that means that you need all your teeth taken out, or maybe you already had your teeth removed, and we need to replace all those teeth. So there are several different ways to do that. The first way, kind of one of the more common ways, is what we call a snap-in denture with the mini implants.

Place the mini implants, and the day I put the mini implants in, I’ll put the attachments inside this denture. A lot of times maybe we make you a new denture, and you’ll leave with that denture snapped on the same day I put the mini implants in. And we’ll do the same thing on the bottom, so you can have an upper snap-in denture and a lower snap-in denture. Then you have something that’s going to stay in your mouth, not move around and flop around. You don’t have to use any glue.

The second way we can do a full mouth reconstruction is what we call a roundhouse bridge, and this is made out of a much stronger material. It’s zirconia, so it can be trimmed back to just basically the teeth, which makes it feel a lot more comfortable in your mouth. There’s nothing on the roof of your mouth. You can taste all your food, and we use the mini implants to anchor these in as well. And once the bridge is anchored onto those mini dental implants, you don’t have to take that out every day.

You’re going to brush it. We give you a Waterpik to use once a day, and it’s the closest thing to getting your natural teeth back. So we can do this on the top or the bottom. The other thing we also offer is you can do the bridge on the top, because a lot of people don’t want anything on the roof of their mouth, and you can do a snap-in denture on the bottom. I call it the combo.

So there’s lots of different options to do full mouth reconstruction. When you come in, we do a free consultation, includes the 3D x-ray. I will do an exam, see what your goals are, and we’ll decide what the best treatment for you is. So please call for the free consultation.
