Dental Implant Recovery – Healing Time and What to Expect

The short answer

Dr. Ackerman discusses eating soft foods during the first couple of weeks and avoiding excessive pressure while the implant heals. She says some aching may occur during the first 24–48 hours and encourages follow-up if concerns arise.

After implant placement, you want to know what you can eat and how much discomfort to expect. In this video, Dr. Regan Ackerman explains the recovery instructions she discusses with patients after mini dental implant treatment.

So what does healing look like after mini dental implant treatment? A lot of times I get asked, is there going to be a lot of bleeding? And the answer is no, because when I place the mini dental implant, I’m not doing any incisions or stitches. So when you leave the office, there’ll be no bleeding. If we do a single tooth or denture stabilization, I’m going to tell you to probably stick with soft foods for the first couple weeks because we want the implant to heal.

Our fancy term is osseointegration. We want the bone to kind of grab onto that implant. And also, I always relate it to like when you put a fence post in the ground, you’ve got to give it time to set up. You don’t go pounding away right away on that. So we want to give it time.

So as far as the healing process, we just want you to go easy on it. No chewing ice or jawbreakers on it. Stick with softer foods. Depending on the procedure you had, you may have a little achiness the first 24, 48 hours, but there’s no massive swelling, not like when you get your wisdom teeth taken out, sometimes you look like a chipmunk. That is not going to happen with the mini implant.

And if it does, you’re going to come back and see me the next day, and I’m going to take care of it, but that has never happened. But please, just call for the free consultation, because it’s a lot less invasive, and the healing time’s pretty minimal.

Give the implant time to heal

Dr. Ackerman emphasizes that having a tooth or denture attached does not eliminate the need for healing. Following the food and care instructions for your procedure helps protect the area during that period. She also wants patients to contact the office about concerns.
