The short answer
Dr. Ackerman says her advice depends on clenching, grinding, denture wear, and comfort. She discusses why some patients remove their dentures at night and why the nighttime routine should be reviewed for the individual patient.
Once you have snap-in dentures, you may wonder whether to leave them in while sleeping. In this video, Dr. Regan Ackerman explains the factors she considers and why she discusses nighttime wear with each patient.
So many patients ask if they should sleep with their snap-in denture in. So the majority of the time, I would say the answer is yes, you can sleep with them. I don’t have a problem with that. The only time I recommend people taking them out at night is if they’re clenching at night, bruxing at night, and they usually know if they’re doing that because it just puts a lot of wear and tear on the denture. Or maybe you’re breaking your denture a lot, probably because you’re clenching at nighttime.
Then I would recommend taking the denture out at night. Now, if you don’t have any problems taking your denture out at night, I may recommend just doing that on a regular basis regardless, even if you’re not a bruxer or clencher, because that way you’re just not putting the wear and tear on those dentures at nighttime. We do things in our sleep we just don’t know we do. So can you wear them at night? Yes, you can.
I would say as long as you’re not a severe clencher or bruxer. If you prefer to take them out at night, you can certainly do that as long as the implants don’t bother your tongue or your cheek. So it just kind of depends on you, your comfort level, if you’re a bruxer or a clencher. I have many patients that sleep in their dentures. I have many patients that take them out.
So it just kind of depends on the scenario, and we can certainly talk through that.
