Same Day Dentures After Tooth Extractions

One of the biggest concerns about having teeth removed is whether you will leave without teeth. In this video, Dr. Regan Ackerman explains how immediate dentures are prepared in advance and what happens on extraction day.

Do we provide immediate dentures after full mouth extraction? And the answer is yes. That’s kind of one of the more important questions I get. If people need all their teeth taken out, top, bottom, or maybe they just need their top teeth taken out, they ask, "Hey Doc, am I going to be without teeth?" The answer is no. So the process is before you have your teeth taken out, I will take impressions or scans and records and pictures and measurements to have that immediate denture made. So that denture will get made before the teeth are extracted or removed. I’ll look at your x-rays and we’ll assess.

Sometimes we can do the extractions here in office, and so, I would remove all the teeth and place the immediate denture that day. So you leave wearing the denture.

There are certain cases where I may have to refer you to the oral surgeon, and if that’s the case, I give you the denture, you take it with you to that appointment, the oral surgeon will take out the teeth and put the immediate denture in that day. And then usually I like to see you the next day, to make any adjustments, make sure everything’s going well for you, but definitely we do immediate dentures. We do them all the time. It’s really important. I understand nobody wants to be without teeth, so immediate dentures are very important, but we will take those impressions and records and we get those immediate dentures processed and made before you have your teeth taken out.
